"The Hero’s Journey":
Driving Leadership and
Professional Development
on Campus
- Have you ever wondered why certain people refuse the development opportunities in front of them, while others respond positively over and over again?
- Have you ever wished for a template your leadership can use that energizes employees instead of sapping their strength regardless of size and complexity of task?
- Everyone is talking about mentorship, but do you know exactly how mentors fit into your career and those you manage?
- Do you know how to create the best environment for employees to flourish?
The late Joseph Campbell published his definitive study in 1949 entitled "The Hero with a Thousand faces." His premise was simple; while the costumes change from culture to culture, the hero’s deed or act, and the process that he or she undertakes in achieving that goal remains virtually the same.
Campbell collected the mythologies, legends, folktales, religious materials and oral histories from virtually all cultures on the planet, and then did a comparative analysis on them. He discovered that it didn’t matter if you were reading the majestic tracts of the Chinese philosophy of Loa Tse, the Torah, or listening to the oral history of the most isolated Aborigine in the Australian outback – the hero’s journey followed a very specific pattern in all of them. His hero process is legendary within the literary community, and many authors credit his work as pivotal in the development of highly successful films, plays and novels.
We have adapted Campbell’s process for Leadership and Professional Development because it answers the questions sited above, and many more. The Hero’s Journey has been adapted into a six-step process: The Call to Adventure, Supernatural Aid, Crossing the First Threshold, The Trials, The Prize and The Return
What can we benefit from this discovery? What Campbell tells us is that any time an individual is charged with accomplishing a difficult task, this is the process he or she must go through in order to achieve it. It is what makes sense to the human creature. It is the true paradigm, by mankind, for mankind developed from our collective wisdom throughout history. Campbell tells us that if we provide the proper tools for the hero, we create an environment in which he or she is likely to succeed. Conversely, if we fail to provide the hero with these basics, he or she is likely to end up turned to a pillar of stone, or as bones on the floor of some dragon’s cave…
Our program will offer this unique strategic process to assist you and those you manage in meeting the day to day challenges on your campuses. Because this paradigm is absolutely universal, we can format it to fit most of current topics such as; Diversity, Customer Service, Transition Management, Leadership, Teamwork, Ethics, Safety, ETC. Let us know the topic and we will craft the scenes to precisely illustrate the Hero’s Journey.
Also, we have workshops available to fully operationalize the Hero’s Journey that builds unique fellowships (teams) ready and equipped to take on every large and small task within your institution.
This half day learning event can be used in conjunction with our theatre presentation or as a stand alone. Like our theatre presentations, the content can be fully customized to meet your specific needs on campus.
We look forward to sharing with you and your staff this exciting information that is sure to resonate with all who attend.
