"BREAKING THE CODES":
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS

"Breaking the Codes" acknowledges that in this age of communication, with technology allowing us to share information through an incredible array of media and format, we still have trouble saying what we mean and meaning what we say. This program provides a refresher on the components of interpersonal communication, emphasizes their importance in internal and external customer service, and defines the five major characteristics of communicating effectively. Audiences will identify with these examples on their way to understanding the concepts and skills that create better communicators.

Scenes Included in the Program:

ARE THERE SHIITAKES?
We can all sympathize with this employee as she tries to serve her customer well in the face of a communication breakdown. This is a great metaphor of what an important role communication plays in all businesses.

MY WAY
When everyone focuses on sending his own message, no one is prepared to receive information. Effective communication is not unidirectional, but cyclical, requiring an exchange of ideas to accomplish the goal.

GARBLING THE CODE
What are the obstacles to effective communication? This scene shows how hidden agendas can prevent us from listening to the messages sent our way.

MIXED MESSAGES
A great deal of information usually accompanies the basic message we send. Learning to decode this "hidden" information makes for more effective communicators.

IMPOSTOR
All information must filter through personal prejudice and bias. This character's story illustrates how the resulting "psychological noise" undermines the communication process.

WORK STUDY
This example of sexual harassment on campus illustrates how unethical communication often relies on implication and innuendo.

NOW, A LITTLE SOMETHING ABOUT ME
Ever meet someone who didn't know when to shut up? This diatribe is proof positive that certain people really need to understand the limits of self-disclosure!
